FARC AND COLUMBIA - PEACE IS WORTH STRIVING FOR MORE THAT WAR, AND OF GREATER BENEFIT (La paz es digno de esfuerzo más que la guerra, y de mayor beneficio!)

The Government of Colombia and what has remained of FARC, the guerrilla movement which has been fighting to overthrow the government, have finally signed an agreement to end the war which has been going on for the past 52 years.

On 4th October 2016, the people of Colombia will be asked to cast their votes in support of or against the agreement. There is alot at stake, and the outcome could mean the resumption of the war, even if on a smaller, but probably more intense scale, as some of FARC's guerrillas return to the jungle to join the guerrillas who have refused to be a party  to the agreement, or as a new breakaway force.  Yet, we have to believe that this will simply not be allowed to happen.

Some Colombians, including the former President, Uribe, are opposed to the agreement. For them, it seems, nothing short of exterminating the guerrillas or throwing them all into the dungeons, will suffice. At least, for now, with the hope that, in the course of time, even these seemingly implacable opponents of the agreement, will come to embrace the prudence of President Santos' decision to put as much or more emphasis on ending this wasteful conflict, as his predecessors had put into persecuting and prolonging it.

War is mass insanity. It does not only robs a country of the lives and health of its people, but it also deprives the country of the great contribution which those who lives it destroys, could and would have made towards its development. In this regards, all wars, to a lesser or greater extent, has at least the potential to become a kind of 'national suicide.'  The only people who profits from wars are the weapons manufacturers and traders.

The soldiers of FARC's army, it seems, are people with good values and ideals, which could explain why they took up arms and have been fighting. That is not to rule out the likelihood of some of them having been coerced or even forced into doing so. I have seen account of some of them wanting to go to college and studying to become nurses, doctors and engineers; all of which would benefit the people of Colombia.

This is why the people of Colombia need to give peace a chance; to vote to accept the agreement and welcome FARC's guerrillas with open-arms; as the prodegal sons and daughters, if you will. So that all can declare their commitment to cooperate and work together for the realisation of a better Colombia.

Timochenko and his army of guerrillas have acted prudently in working with the Government of President Santos and others, including the Cubans, to bring about this agreement. It really is the best option for both the guerrillas and Colombians in general. As it now allows for the normalisation of life in the country. Not having to worry about the war and its impact on people, Colombians will have more time to allocate to working to achieve the benefits of the peace which will and should ensue. Providing any right wing paramilitary force is kept under control and does not usurp the law.

So, come on, people of Colombia. Voting to accept the agreement is really the only option for those of you you want to embrace a peaceful and prosperous future.  With FARC becoming an integral part of the country's political process, conducting its business and pursuing its political goals through the ballot box, like any other Colombian political party.

Good luck, courageous Colombia, although this is the most prudent option open to you.
