Did I really went through a 30 speed limit stretch of the road at or over 40, or was it not that fast?
And, if I had just done so, were there any cameras zeroing on my car?
Might I just have been caught on camera breaking the speed limit, despite the fact that, even though I was aware of the temporary reduction in the speed limit at this part of the road? Due to roads work taking place there.
Yes, it took only a brief lapse of concentration on the road. One of those moments which probably all drivers will have experienced in their driving careers.
When they/we become preoccupied with what we could call extraneous thoughts, and speed through the camera point or along the road above the speed limit.
And only realise it half way through, or after we have passed it.
With our, oops, being replaced with a state of shock and incredulity, as we become concerned about whether the camera caught us.
Hoping, at the sametime, that this was one of those instances when it was not working.
Of course, if we are unfortunately enough to have been caught by the Camera van lurking unexpectedly at some strategic point along the road. Then, there is unlikely to be any uncertainty about our fate.
On this occasion, however, I was without any defence. The law does not allow for the defence of, well, a momentary lapse of driving without due care and attention.
There was no reasonable defence for me probably seeing the 30 limit, but not recognising it and getting my brain to process it and communicate the appropriate reaction in my feet.
To be continued!
