I am not sure whether this has partly been a result of her unhappy marriage, and/or because she had given up on men, as a result of her experience having been married to one.
If she had had another relationship, it clearly would have had profound impact on her life and that of her family.
What we do not know, is what would have been the positive and negative effect or such a relationship. But there is nothing to be had from speculating about an event which could have, but did not take place.
But, as I have surmised, having had an unexceptionally unhappy and tough childhood, and a significantly violent and abusive marriage.
It is probably understandable why she had not had another relationship. Why she had committed herself working, at one stage even doing two jobs, and to looking after her children in their years of vulnerability.
My dear mother was brought up in an age, a time when people were defined by the nature of their character, be it a good or bad one.
Whether they were tough or soft, industrious or indolent, and not so much by whether they were compassionate, kind or cruel, and so on.
To be continued!
