The problem is bigger than the terrible atrocity which has just occurred in New Zealand. It is about what is happening in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, the Sahel region of Africa, the Philippines, et al.
We have to move beyond just living side by side or parallel to one another, in our 'multicultural and multi-ethnic and multi-faiths' countries.
We have to become integrated. We have to mix more, not just socially and in the workplace. We need to become more permeable in the different religious faiths we practice.
We have to work at becoming more knowledgeable about our differences which places barriers and causes tensions between us.
And work consistently at bridging them, so that we have more of a shared and unconflicting private and national life.
We need to have debates and avoid stifling or shutting down difficult debates and discussion, for fear of them being interpreted as Islamophobic, or promoting it.
We need to elicit peoples' true beliefs, mindsets and fears, so that they can be openly analysed, debated and addressed appropriately.
We need to be more proactive in our bridge-building towards a holistically shared, inclusive and organic culture and society. Since parallel existence of the different main worldviews is not working, neither is it a desirable state to strive for.
