We should not underestimate the virulence and violence which all forms of 'nationalism' can mete out to innocent people.
Whether it is nationalism based on stereotypical premises about 'race', ethnicity, religion or culture. Nationalism is a very strong force for corrupting the 'nationalists' and dehumanising and oppressing the perceived 'the outsiders' or 'others.'
Indeed, nationalism, with its dogmas about 'self' and 'others, is a form of religion, an ideology.
And, in the case of India's BJP and its apparent perception of 'India for the Hindus', it seems to be nothing short of a vengeful religio-cultural renaissance.
I mean, it now seems to be the case that the BJP has become the 'spiritual home', the temple of Indians who are now looking back on their Mogul past with disdain and shame.
And with some of them seeing their Muslim fellow citizens as a reminder of a past which they would like to change, and not be reminded of by the presence of their fellow Muslim Indians in their midst.
Although Hindus make up 4/5 of India's population, the BJP, it seems, is of the view that it is necessary for this reality to be made more powerful, in your face, with a kind of blunt 'Hindu-majoritarianism.'
To be continued!
